White Out

While it was budding springtime in Yellowstone and the valleys of Wyoming, it was still snowy in the mountain passes. People pull over on the side of the road, get out, and ski.

The original wasn’t as stark of an image as I wanted to evoke. Plus, it wasn’t bright enough. That blob with the two humans is their dog.

Big Sky Country

This picture doesn’t do the Montana sky justice. Those are some big clouds though!

I took this shot on horseback during our half-day trail ride.

The original: I should know better by now not to put my horizon right in the middle.

The original was so dark. I adjusted everything on the “basic” panel of Lightroom then moved down to the color panel and did some adjusting there. I also added just a little bit of grain.

Columns

Here’s an example of making use of what you’ve got. I wish I would have waited about five or ten more seconds to take the shot, so the woman would be in better view, but this is what I shot. Editing it made it more interesting and worthy of a travel scrap book. (Also, take more than one shot!)

Here’s the original. Crooked much?! Straightening it cropped it in a little. I adjusted contrast and clarity, and lowered the exposure of the light in the back of the photo.

Luna Moth

A quick stop during a long night of driving.

You never know what your’e going to see in at a rest stop.

I’m pretty sure I took this with my iPhone. I increased the saturation on the moth and darkened the brick a little. I was able to lower the exposure of the harsh light in the upper right corner using a graduated filter.

Deep Conversation

They’ve been a pair for all their lives (he’s just four months younger than she is).

They solve the world’s problems on a daily basis.

The original was still cute, but a little distracting. Cropping in a little bit and changing it to black and white helps the eye focus on their heads. I upped the contrast in the whole pic and then used the adjustment brush (Lightroom) to decrease the contrast on their bodies.
