Love is in the air

God is not-so-subtly telling me that we need to have “the talk” soon with Reagan. We went to the zoo today and the only animals that were out were fish and mating frogs. I kid you not.

There’s a smaller frog on the back of Big Mama. He’s camouflaged pretty well.

So, those last ones are technically newts. But, geez! How many times can we say, “oh yes, they’re playing leap frog!” Love was definitely in the air. Or the zoo sprayed some kind of amphibian love pheromone in the tanks to get things started. Ahem. Maybe their frog population was dwindling. After today I can guarantee there will be new hatchlings very soon.

The kids have gone cra cra

As a parent it becomes your duty to force your kids to help clean up around the house. Chores, whether paid or not, are doled out to the kids like unsuspected torture and the noises that come from their little pie holes make it seem like no one’s ever had life as rough.

All that changed yesterday when Ash actually asked if she could mop. Who was I to say no? Then she wanted to wash the windows. I made sure she was speaking English and then I broke a land speed record fetching the Windex and paper towels.

My little directives and “you missed a spot”s didn’t deter her. Not only was she back for more today but the big one wanted to get involved as well.

So much so that they had written out lists of all the chores they wanted to do. There are words on there that I don’t quite know the meaning of. “Shine”? What does that mean? I don’t ever do that. “Polish”? As in polish furniture? If you want to talk about Polish pottery I’m all ears, but get me away from furniture polish.

Isn’t that cute. She’s written down “sweep” twice!

This really is one of the cutest things I’ve seen. She wrote down “mop” all by herself!

To the aliens that have abducted my children and replaced them with little Cinderellas. You may keep them as long as the batteries don’t wear out on these new models. From the looks of it (below) I think they’ve got Energizers.

He’s always got to read every plaque. I’ve learned to be patient though because he doesn’t complain when we go shopping and I have to look at every rack of sale clothes.

A hint of spring?

Doves have been visiting our backyard the past couple of afternoons. The first day I saw them there were no less than eight back there. Yesterday I saw only one. A pair usually takes up residence in our friends’ backyard. Maybe they’re trying out new digs, or they’ve invited their relatives to move closer to them.

My only hope is that this is God’s sign to me that spring is on its way.

Studying

I have signed up for yet another photo journal project. Willette’s Joy of Love. This is only for one month and it’s a daily prompt, which will help me be more creative. What’s super cool is, along with the photo prompt, she gives tips each day on how to take better pictures. Today’s tip was about lighting. I learned a new term: “catchlight”.

The prompt for today was “What They Do”. We’re supposed to take pictures of our loved one/s all month. I chose to take a picture of Reagan “doing school” because she does that a lot. There isn’t any catchlight in the picture, but there didn’t have to be.

She looks so studious. She is getting much better about being able to focus on her own, without me having to hover, prompting her to keep going. Maybe this is God telling me I can move along and start working with Ashlyn as well.

I managed to catch this photo as well today. I just thought it was cool.

Notes to self on birthday prep

Notes to self regarding birthday prep and celebrations:

  1. When using gel to color butter cream frosting take note that it will intensify in color over time. I was worried about Hello Kitty’s bow being pink when it’s supposed to be red so I added the entire little container of red gel coloring to my 1 cup of white icing. At first I still didn’t think it would be red enough. By the time we cut the cake it had gone from pink, to red, to deep burgundy edging on black.
  2. When celebrating the birthday of an offspring that weighed over 8 pounds at birth it might be nice to actually get a picture of yourself with the little 4-year old bowling ball. I took pictures of her with her Hello Kitty, burgundy bow, cake from every conceivable angle. I even stood up on the chair to get shots of her decorating her goody bag. Not one. single. picture. with our faces together.
  3. When buying balloons to be inflated with helium for the party it is essential to buy more than you’ll actually need. We had nine girls attending the party, so like a novice I ordered nine balloons. What happens on the way home? One of them pops scaring the poop out of all of us and rendering me unable to pass out balloons at the end of the party. Now I have eight balloons in my house and my cat likes to eat the strings. Talk about poop.
  4. Cups. Remember the cups. And forks.
